Materiality Assessment

Comprehensive Materiality Assessment

In light of the growing emphasis on ESG management and sustainable development, companies are increasingly recognising the importance of identifying ESG-related issues associated with their business operations and value chain. To better address emerging ESG-related issues, particularly climate-related risks and opportunities, GreenCo recently helps a client to identify the most critical ESG issues through a comprehensive materiality assessment.

Identifying Material ESG Issues

Considering the company’s business nature and international standards, GreenCo first helps the company update and expand its list of ESG issues based on industry research and peer benchmarking.

Understanding that each stakeholder holds a unique perspective on ESG management, GreenCo helps the company identify key stakeholders based on their level of impact, including the management and employees of the company, shareholders and investors, customers, government, suppliers, local communities, and organisations. After determining the list of key stakeholders, GreenCo creates a customised questionnaire for the company to engage with them to assess the significance of each identified ESG issue. Moreover, GreenCo arranges interviews with the company’s stakeholder representatives to gain a deeper understanding of their views and comments on the Group’s ESG performance.

After receiving feedback from key stakeholders, GreenCo analyses all survey responses and normalises the results to identify Tier 1 material ESG issues. The results are formulated into a Materiality Matrix, allowing the company to better understand and present the findings in a visual way.

Sustainability has become an increasingly important metric of corporate performance, and materiality assessment is a well-established tool for measuring it. Leveraging professional knowledge and digital technology, GreenCo empowers clients to effectively identify material ESG issues so that they are well prepared for the rapidly changing business environment.
